About The Mine Tour
The No. 9 Mine, once abandoned, was revived
in 1992 by the Panther Creek Valley
Foundation, a dedicated non-profit committed
to preserving the region’s coal mining heritage.
Restoration began in 1995, and by 2002, the
mine reopened as a museum, offering a
unique glimpse into the past and celebrating
the legacy of the area’s miners.
This immersive experience offers a fascinating
glimpse into the life and work of the miners who
once toiled in these tunnels.
Mine Tour Conditions
- 1600' Ride into the Mine: Visitors will start with a 1600-foot ride into the mine, setting the stage for the tour.
- Guided Walking Tour: The tour lasts approximately one hour, offering insights into the mine's history and operations.
- 600' Walking Path: The walking route covers about 600 feet inside the mine.
- Loose-Packed Gravel: The path is made up of loose-packed gravel, which may be uneven in places.
- Exposed Rail Sections: Some areas of the path have exposed rail, which could present a tripping hazard.
- Wet/Slippery Conditions: The mine environment is wet and slightly muddy, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
- 50 Degrees Year-Round: The temperature inside the mine remains consistently cool at 50 degrees Fahrenheit, regardless of the season.
- For Those Not Joining the Mine Tour: If you decide not to participate in the mine tour, you can still have a great experience by exploring the museum. The museum offers engaging exhibits, making it a worthwhile visit while you wait for your party.
- Appropriate Attire (Recommended but NOT Required):
- Light Jacket or Sweater: Since the mine is 50 degrees year-round, a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
- Closed-Toe Shoes: The paths in the mine are made of loose gravel and can be muddy in some areas, so closed-toe shoes are advisable.
About The Museum
The museum is located in the No. 9 Mine’s original
“Wash Shanty,” a historic building constructed before
the First World War.
Inside, you’ll find the largest collection of mining
artifacts in the area, showcasing a wide array of
tools, blasting equipment, household goods, and
more, all once used by the miners who worked at the
No. 9 Coal Mine.
The museum also features a gift shop, where visitors
can purchase unique items like books, coal crafts,
and t-shirts, offering a memorable keepsake from
your visit.
